CRUX Feature: Andrew Terrell

Reverberations of Soul

Andrew Terrell's work comes from an instinctual, brutally honest place. There is a fearlessness in what he produces that breathes mood and darkness, despite the use of bright, simple colors.

Time and time again, I have witnessed Andrew take a "finished" piece and cover it with white or splash black across it's core to begin again. It is this willingness to let go of past strokes that sets him apart, an ability to both cherish a certain quality in a painting and respect it enough to wipe it from existence in order to make a piece work.

Andrew's relationship with paint is an intense one. He may even go so far as to say that art has saved him from a rapid descent into youthful oblivion. Like so many creative soul's, he exists in mental and physical extremes; his discovery of painting has become a narrow yet sturdy bridge offering him passage to a place of hope rather than despair.

Recent shows at the Naked Lounge and Butte College mark the first of what will be many offerings by Andrew Terrell to the art world. His need to produce and appetite to represent a tumultious internal landscape on canvas ensures an artistic career worth keeping a close eye on.
